A Proverbs 31 woman. She does it all. She’s a great wife and mother, manages her house well, cooks, sews, and she doesn’t ever seem to get tired. I get tired just reading about her.
She’s a legend, a superwoman. I used to read that and think, ‘I don’t like that woman.’ That is, until I realised that this woman doesn’t have a name. Could this be because God wants us to insert our names in this chapter? Instead of seeing her as someone you could never be, see her as an example. Someone to look up to.
Proverbs 31:17 (AMP) says, ‘she girds herself with strength [spiritual, mental and physical fitness for her God-given task] and makes her arms strong and firm.’
What are her God-given tasks? They’re mentioned in all those other verses in Proverbs 31 – running the household, being a great mother, cooking, and so forth. How do you think she accomplishes those tasks? Maybe the key is in verse 17. She keeps fit in three areas: spiritual, mental and physical.
In 2010 my husband and I thought it would be fun to ride in The Argus. I was completely unfit, but decided I was up for the challenge. I started training, eating right, and going to the gym. All this while working full time at a demanding job and taking care of our two girls. But it was worth it; I finished the race!
If we want to be that Proverbs 31 woman, it’s a matter of staying fit and balanced in all three of these areas. In 1 Timothy 4:7–8 Paul admonishes Timothy to ‘train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things…’
Go ahead and insert your own name in Proverbs 31 and be that woman God created you to be, accomplishing your God-given tasks. Be that superwoman!
